following the thread
The women before me worked with thread. They sewed clothes, knitted sweaters, measured bodies, and turned fabric into things to wear, use, and keep. I remember my mother and grandmother taking my measurements, the rustle of sewing patterns, the yarn and threads that were always around.
I work with the same materials, but follow the thread somewhere else. Sewing patterns become surfaces for drawing, stitches no longer hold fabric together, and threads tangle, wander, and come undone.
In these works, I carry on a familiar gesture while allowing it to change. A thread connecting generations of women, their hands, their labor, their care and my own attempt to make something different from what they passed on.
